Symptoms of Ear Fungal Infections in Dogs

As pet owners, it’s crucial to be aware of the symptoms of various health issues our dogs may encounter, including ear fungal infections. Ear fungal infections in dogs, commonly known as otitis externa, can be uncomfortable for your pet and, if left untreated, can lead to more severe complications. Here, we’ll discuss the common symptoms of ear fungal infections in dogs to help you detect and address them promptly.

The most notable symptom of ear fungal infections is head shaking or tilting. Dogs with infected ears often try to shake their heads vigorously to dislodge debris or ease the discomfort. Additionally, they may tilt their heads to one side in an attempt to keep the infected ear in a more comfortable position.

Another common symptom is odor. A fungal infection in the ear can lead to a foul, yeasty odor that’s noticeable when you’re close to your dog’s head. This odor is caused by the growth of yeast and bacteria in the infected ear canal.

Discharge from the ear is also a telltale sign of an ear fungal infection. You may notice a brown, yellow, or black waxy discharge coming from your dog’s ear. This discharge is often accompanied by a foul odor and can be sticky or crusty.

Redness and inflammation of the ear canal are other common symptoms. When infected, the skin inside the ear canal becomes red and inflamed. In severe cases, the ear flap itself may become swollen.

Scratching or rubbing at the ears is another behavior that dogs with ear infections often exhibit. They may paw at their ears or rub them against furniture or the ground in an attempt to alleviate the discomfort.

If you suspect that your dog has an ear fungal infection, it’s important to seek veterinary attention promptly. Your veterinarian will perform a thorough examination of your dog’s ears and may recommend a combination of topical medications, ear cleanings, and oral antibiotics to treat the infection. With prompt and proper treatment, your dog can recover from an ear fungal infection and resume its happy and healthy life.
