To His Son

Three things there are that prosper up apace,
And flourish while they grow asunder far;
But on a day, they meet and know each other,
And from that hour they never part again.
The first is Love, the second War, the third
Is Fortune—three things women wish for men.
Yet when they meet, as often chance may bring them,
They end in death, or in dishonour’s stain.
