The words aeroplane, airplane, and plane all refer to the same type of fixed-wing aircraft—but their usage varies by region:
Planes stay aloft thanks to four fundamental forces: lift, weight, thrust, and drag. Wings are specially shaped (airfoils) so that air moves faster over the top than underneath, creating lower pressure above and higher pressure below—this difference generates lift.
