Understanding the Science of Speech Sounds
Phonetics is the branch of linguistics that studies the sounds of human speech. It examines how speech sounds are produced (articulatory), transmitted (acoustic), and perceived (auditory).
Unlike phonology—which deals with how sounds function within a particular language—phonetics is concerned with the physical properties of sounds themselves.
The IPA is a standardized system used by phoneticians to represent the sounds of spoken language. It allows precise transcription across all languages.
Examples:
English "cat" → /kæt/
French "bonjour" → /bɔ̃ʒuʁ/
Spanish "gracias" → /ˈɡɾaθjas/
Human beings can produce over 800 distinct speech sounds, but any single language uses only a small subset—typically between 20 and 60!
